ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL & GOVERNANCE (ESG)

Building the Foundations of Responsible Mining

The Philippine Mining Development Corporation (PMDC) integrates Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its activities as part of its mandate to support responsible mineral development.

While PMDC’s projects are currently in various stages of evaluation, permitting, and coordination, the Corporation implements programs and engagement activities that reflect its commitment to:

  • Environmental stewardship
  • Community development
  • Transparent governance

These efforts are carried out within PMDC’s project areas and in coordination with government agencies, local stakeholders, and host communities.

Why ESG Matters to PMDC

PMDC operates within environmentally sensitive areas and in close coordination with host communities, including Indigenous Peoples. As such, ESG is essential to ensure that:

  1. Project development is aligned with environmental and regulatory requirements
  2. Communities are informed and engaged through established processes
  3. Programs are implemented to support basic services and local needs
  4. Activities are conducted with proper documentation, coordination, and accountability

Even at the pre-development stage, these elements are necessary to support responsible planning and implementation of future mining projects.

How ESG is Implemented in PMDC

Environmental (E)

Stewardship and Site-Based Environmental Activities

Environmental initiatives focus on community participation and awareness, supporting environmental actions and information dissemination within project areas. These activities include:

  • Reforestation activities
  • Environmental awareness campaigns
  • Waste management practices
  • Environmental discussions during community assemblies

Social (S)

Community Programs through the HERO Program

PMDC implements its social programs through its CSR framework:

Health • Education • Rural Infrastructure • Opportunities to Earn

Programs and initiatives provide basic services, engagement, and community-based activities within host areas:

  • Medical and dental outreach
  • School support and awareness campaigns
  • Community water system support
  • Livelihood skills training

Connecting the Three Pillars

PMDC’s ESG approach is not implemented in isolation. Environmental activities are conducted with community participation. Social programs are coordinated with stakeholders and aligned with project areas. Governance processes guide how activities are implemented, documented, and reported.

Together, these ensure that activities are coordinated and documented, stakeholders are engaged through proper processes, and programs are aligned with both community needs and project requirements
